NAFAS is an air quality technology company based in Jakarta, Indonesia, that combines connected hardware and AI to quantify the health impacts of air pollution and climate change. Nafas also provides indoor air quality solutions through a hardware-as-a-service model, helping buildings in emerging markets tackle indoor air pollution in a data-driven and cost-effective way.

Back in 2023, I applied for a Data Analyst/Data Scientist position at Nafas, and as part of the initial test, they gave me a set of questions to answer. There were seven questions, primarily focused on analyzing Indonesia’s air quality, identifying relationships between common air pollutants such as NOx, SOâ‚‚, CO, and O₃ with PM2.5 (particulate matter measuring 2.5 micrometers in diameter), examining the correlation between indoor and outdoor air pollution, identifying trends from one of their sensor machines across 20 stations, and developing a simple yet functional visualization or dashboard.

Here, I’d like to share my thought process on these topics, which might help you learn more about air pollutants, especially in Indonesia.

The Tools
At that time, I was still using Google Sheets as an analytical tool. To analyze and identify trends in common air pollutants and determine their relationship with PM2.5, I used Google Sheets to process and analyze data from the NAFAS dataset, which has been retrieved from their sensors in specific areas of Indonesia.

After that, I worked on making sense of the numbers and transforming them into meaningful and useful visualizations using Tableau. It took several iterations to develop the final dashboard. However, as with other projects I've worked on, I ensured that the colors and design aligned with the NAFAS brand image—primarily using green.

Finalising
Although in the end, I did not get the job as a Data Analyst/Data Scientist for NAFAS, I was still grateful because the experience allowed me to deepen my understanding of air quality data, refine my analytical skills, and gain hands-on practice in data visualization and trend analysis. It also gave me valuable insights into environmental data analytics, which could be beneficial for future opportunities.​
